Building this California king-sized pencil post was a definite stretch of my little 20 x 30’ barn shop’s capabilities. From ensuring that I don’t bash a freshly-profiled and smoothed 80-inch tall octagonal log off the ceiling and ding up the edges, to maneuvering multiple 84+ inch long 8/4 slabs that weigh 80+ lbs a pop across the jointer, to the overarching existential dread wrought from not being able to actually assemble the thing until it’s in its final location- this one was quite an adventure. Post and rail stock in some delightful local black cherry wood sourced from the ever reliable @hearnehardwoods (h/t for letting me tear the bins apart multiple times- hope I put it all back ok). Secondary slats and rails from cherry as well (from an auction) since it’s now apparently cheaper than poplar. Shop turned finials for the ‘cherry’ on top. All surfaces finished to 0000 steel wool and finished with Osmo PolyX Satin. Design was a synthesis of different elements I liked from Thos Moser, Christian Becksvoort, Lonnie Bird versions - with a lot of winging it in between. Best part was being able to pass out in it after it was together.

Process.
