Hi, I’m Anthony. I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania and spent my formative years beneath the canopies of our seemingly endless forests. I’ve always been a “maker” so it was only natural that I united my arboreal interests with a set of finely sharpened chisels. In today’s world of ephemeral mass produced junk, I take delight in constructing solid wood furniture pieces designed to last for generations. Furniture comprised of solid wood has performed an essential function throughout much of human history. From our dining tables and chairs, storage chests, dressers, shelves, and cabinets – home décor from traditional to modern – each of these items draws upon thousands of years of experimentation and discovery of the best methods to construct pieces that maintain their stability and functionality across a wide range of environmental conditions. As a Chemist by day, I find it essential to understand the microscopic properties of various species and cuts of wood and how they translate to the macroscopic principles of joinery that account for the ever-present reality of wood movement. Woodworkers know that while curly maple is awesome, curly walnut is something truly special and rare- and in wide 12”+ stock almost unheard of. Thankfully, our fine local sawmills have a penchant for acquiring these ancient logs and always have a selection on hand of spectacular figured walnut that rivals the finest exotic tropical hardwoods whose harvest and transport stateside takes such a heavy toll on our environment. I completed both of these chests in the Spring of 2022, one with a front drawer, one without. Although technically a hardwood in the same family as black walnut, it’s almost as soft as pine- so frequent trips to the sharpening pond are absolutely critical to getting crisp joints. I once read an article that described butternut as filling in the often neglected medium coloration category between the maples, pines, poplars on the light end and the cherries, walnuts on the dark side. Either way, it definitely looks very “Shaker”. Sadly a canker disease is wiping out these trees with most experts agreeing that they’ll likely go extinct within our lifetimes. From the first time I saw this little Shaker Sewing Table in Handberg’s book, I knew had to build a version of it. Although the original is in butternut, I opted for local Pennsylvania black cherry for the casework. The drawer fronts are from a spectacular hunk of curly Swiss pear that I found at a local mill. Quartersawn hard maple, eastern white pine (bottoms) and holly (pulls) round out the drawers. In lieu of a turned stock leg, I wanted to show off a beautiful rift sawn hunk of Walnut. Ash dowels dot the breadboard ends on the table and make an added appearance at the extension breadboard ends. The un-extended table is 6 feet from end to end. In Party Mode it extends to 8 feet in length to accommodate up to 10 people. This is accomplished through a custom-engineered end extension design. I fixed Ash wood boards to the underside of the extensions and developed a tie and lock to the underside of the main top.
